This painting is of a subject that is very dear to me. The statue, titled "Unity" is in a park right down the street from where I grew up. As a little girl it was my favorite destination for walks... which usually turned into piggy back rides. 5 years ago I started going back every spring to paint plein air. I don't think spring can come without visit!
As a history lover, I have always admired the symbolism of the sculpture as well. It was created as a commemoration of national unity during WWI. The two horses represent the north and south, the figure reigning them in is the spirit of teamwork, unity, and common cause.
